Marigold

Scary thing happened today.

I came home from food shopping and Marigold had gotten eaten a box of chocolate donuts, the lid of our trash can, and a bunch of extra strength tylenol. And when I say a bunch, I'm estimating between 80 and 120, enough to kill a dog (so my vet said).

After calling the vet emergency line and running out to get some hyrdrogen peroxide (which induces vomitting), I had the task of pouring this stuff down her throat. Considering I was by myself and we didn't have a turkey baster or any other easy way of administering fluid down her throat, I was forced to pin her down and try to pour it. After several failed attempts, Marigold had finally had it and was hiding from me, terrified. What a horrible feeling - she totally thought I was trying to hurt her. I broke down and we both sat in the kitchen, crying.

Finally, the vet told me to bring her in. On the way, Mara threw up all over my car (of course). When I got to the vet, they told me to look through the throw up (labor of love) to see how many of the capsules I could find. I didn't find any.

They put her in ICU for the day and had her on an IV while they pumped her full of medicine and antidotes.

She's home now, but only because we insisted that they release her for the evening. There's no way I was going to let her sit in a cage all night, alone, unsupervised (it's not a 24 hour vet). We'll bring her back in tomorrow to have the IV taken out.

Of course, she's totally forgiven me (if she even remembers) and right now is happily chewing on a bone at my feet. But what a scare. If I hadn't gotten home when I did.....if I had been away all day, I'm scared to know what would have happened. I don't even want to think about it.

So today, I'm grateful for my dog and her unconditional love, even when faced with fear and sickness.
