Weekend update
This weekend has been great. My parents came into town on Friday afternoon. We went out to dinner Fri. night, and lounged around on the couch after that.
Yesterday was a busy day!! My parents and I went into the city to catch the tail end of the cherry blossom festival at the tidal basin. Most of the cherry blossoms were gone because of a cold front last week, but we were still able to see the Jefferson memorial, which was cool. We walked from there all the way around the tidal basin and up the entire mall. It was a really long walk!! We rested at the cafe in the sculpture garden and had lunch...which was surprisingly affordable and yummy.
Then, we went to the arboretum (but didn't get in). The highlight of the day by far was the American Indian museum. I hadn't been yet (because it just opened last fall) and it was amazing to finally get a chance to explore it. The presentation of the museum was much different than I had expected...instead of being about war and tomahawks and teepees, it was quite contemporary. There was one exhibit about "Contact" (between the American Indians and Europeans) that had lots of history about guns, disease, Christianity, reservations, etc. But the rest of the museum was really about the native people themselves. The exhibits opened a discussion about what makes someone an American Indian..is it in your head, heart, blood? It was really interesting.
The art exhibit was amazing as well. Two sculptors were featured...both considered to be the fathers of Native American art. Their art was so moving--I would have gone to the museum just to see that exhibit.
We were pooped after a long day of walking in the city. We headed back to Arlington and had a great dinner. We capped the night off in Vienna, at a Cold Stone Creamery (YUMMM!!!) and then headed home. I know I was asleep on the couch before 10pm. I think we all were.
