Things to love about Iowa
Okay, so Iowa isn't the most exciting place in the world. And Cedar Rapids is no bustling metropolis. But there are some really wonderful parts about the state, too. Here is a list of things about Iowa I've come to love:
1. The honor system. When you want a refill of a soda, you help yourself and put 50 cents in a little basket. No cashier, no receipt, nothing. And everyone actually does it.
2. The little coffee shop in the basement of our HQ building. I walk in there this morning, and the women working there come around from behind the counter, introduce themselves, and shake my hand.
Also, the owner found out that one of the employees of my company had a nephew who is a painter, so she cleared off all of her wall decor and allowed him to use her shop as a gallery. His stuff is pretty good, too!
3. The skywalk. Iowa can get pretty darn cold, but I never have to go outside if I don't want to. I can walk the four or five blocks from my hotel to my office building through a skywalk. It's an intricate indoor tunnel, resting above the city, with lots of twists and turns and interesting store fronts. I could spend hours getting lost in there and it's so fun!
4. The hotel. In my hotel, there's a clip that keeps my curtains shut. I can actually sleep without worrying about ANY light coming through. Also, they have a CD player in every room and they give you a CD of relaxing music to listen to while you relax/fall asleep. Lastly, they have a lavender linen spray that is in your room when you check in, so you can give your bed a relaxing, light fragrance of fresh lavender. It's just wonderful.
5. The breakfast area. In this hotel, the breakfast area is on the 15th floor and overlooks the whole city (which is probably 40-square blocks...tiny!). I can also see the farmlands beyond the city limits. They just stretch on forever and ever. It's beautiful. I got to see the sunrise over the river and the city and the farmland yesterday morning. Spectacular.
6. Free shuttles everywhere. To a restaurant, to the airport, to your next meeting...these drivers will take you anywhere you want to go and do it with a smile.
7. My teammates who live here found out that I had recently quit smoking. When I came into the office yesterday morning, they had a couple of packs of gum for me and styrofoam cup with ice water in it (my favorite...just the way I like it...how did they know?).
In short, Iowa may be boring, but it's a hell of a nice place to be.
